A new collaborative project is exploring whether social media algorithms can strengthen public discourse instead of reinforcing divisions. Most recommendation systems are designed to maximize attention and engagement. While effective at keeping users on platforms, they can also amplify emotionally charged content and reinforce information bubbles.
BridgEU takes a different approach by investigating how recommendation systems can encourage meaningful exchanges across diverse communities. The project brings together Eurosky, SPRIND, and Dresden University of Technology to develop and test recommendation algorithms that introduce users to relevant perspectives beyond their usual information environment. The aim is to foster constructive discussions and help identify common ground across polarized groups.
At SynoSys, our colleagues Philipp and Bao contribute to the scientific work of the project. Together, they are developing and evaluating a recommendation algorithm that balances relevance with exposure to different viewpoints. Their research will assess whether such systems can support healthier online conversations without compromising the user experience.
Eurosky provides the open social media infrastructure that enables the algorithms to be tested in a real-world environment, connecting scientific research with practical implementation.
